How This Works

Welcome to AstroSnatchers, a thrilling, fast-paced game set in the depths of space! You are an alien pilot tasked with the most daring mission: “rescuing” stranded astronauts who are floating helplessly in the void after their spacecraft collided with a massive asteroid. As you navigate your UFO through the stars, you'll need to slide left and right with precision to snatch up as many astronauts as possible before time runs out. The astronauts are scattered across vast stretches of space, and you'll have to dodge unpredictable asteroid fragments.

INitiation

Coin Insertion

In order to activate our game, you must insert 2 coins within 3 seconds of each other. The Red LED will indicate the reading of a coin by flashing off and on. The game will begin after this, giving players a 3 second countdown to allow time to move their hands to the appropriate positions.

Movement

UFO Maneuvering

To shift the sliding UFO horizontally and avoid asteroids or abduct astronauts, players will turn the steering wheel left or right. This movement will translate directly into the horizontal motion of the sliding UFO, allowing players to navigate space and score as high as possible.

SPEED CONTROL

Joystick Function

While steering the UFO, players must also control the conveyor speed. In its resting state, the joystick is set to a speed of 0, meaning the conveyor is stationary. To increase the conveyor speed, players must push the joystick forward, giving them full control over the speed as they maneuver the UFO.

Visual Feedback

LED Display

The LED matrix will display a one-minute countdown, showing the remaining time until the round ends. It will also track the player's score throughout the game. If there is 20 seconds of inactivity, the LED matrix will signal a timeout and reset the game to its waiting state, preparing for coin insertion.

When considering the scope of your project, also consider the constraints of the tools you use (like the size of the laser cutter bed).

Gem of Wisdom

Consider the iteration time of your project. If your project is significantly more mechanical, it might take longer to build at prototypes and test them compared to more software-heavy projects.

Gem of Wisdom

Use what you know from the labs to help guide your project; consider the time you have and how long it will take to learn something you haven’t used before.
